Bedding Tog Selector: Which Duvet Tog Do I Need?

Bed Kingdom interactive tool · Updated October 2026 · 3 min read

Pick a season and how warm you sleep to get a practical UK duvet tog suggestion, plus links to bedding and mattress help.

Answer a few quick questions about season and how warm you sleep. This is about duvet tog comfort, not medical advice.

What duvet tog numbers mean

Tog measures thermal resistance. Lower tog feels cooler; higher tog feels warmer. Common UK retail bands include about 4.5 (light summer), 7.5–9 (spring/autumn), 10.5 (all-season for many people) and 13.5–15 (winter). Exact comfort still depends on bedroom temperature, pyjamas and whether you share the bed.

Duvet tog is not mattress tog

Some mattresses list a tog for their cover fabrics. That is separate from duvet tog. If you are choosing a mattress for temperature, look at materials (open-coil or breathable hybrids versus denser foams) and read our mattress tog guide or take the sleep style quiz.

Dual-tog sets

A dual-tog set is two duvets (for example 4.5 and 9) that button together for winter and split for summer. Useful if you want one purchase for the year without a very heavy single duvet.

Typical UK duvet tog bands

  • About 3–4.5 tog: cool summer
  • About 7.5–9 tog: late spring / early autumn
  • About 10.5 tog: common all-season choice
  • About 13.5–15 tog: cold bedrooms / winter

These are retail conventions, not a legal scale you must follow. If you share a bed with someone who runs hotter, a dual-tog set or separate duvets on a larger bed can be easier than one very warm duvet.

Mattresses and heat

If you sleep hot, duvet tog is only one lever. Breathable mattress constructions and a washable protector help. See mattresses for hot sleepers, do memory foam mattresses get hot, and browse memory foam or pocket sprung ranges from Maxitex, Recoil and Noomi where they suit you.

Pillows and layers

A thick pillow top or heavy mattress topper can make you warmer even with a light duvet. Keep layers washable. For pillows, use the pillow finder quiz.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a 13.5 tog duvet all year?

Some people do in cold houses, but many find it too warm in summer. An all-season 10.5 tog or a dual-tog set is the usual compromise.

Does tog apply to pillows?

No. Pillows are chosen by fill, loft and sleep position — try our pillow finder quiz.

Will a cooler duvet fix night sweats?

It can help if overheating is the main issue, but mattress materials, room ventilation and bedding layers matter too. This tool does not give medical advice.
