Mattress Firmness Selector
A two-step firmness selector based on sleep position and weight band — then browse matching mattress types at Bed Kingdom.
Firmness is a feel scale, not a hardness guarantee
Brands use soft, medium and firm in slightly different ways. Your weight, sleep position and whether you share the bed all change what “medium” feels like. Use this selector for a starting point, then confirm on the product page and — if you can — in our Birstall showroom.
Position cheat sheet
Side sleepers usually like more cushioning. Front sleepers usually like a flatter, firmer surface. Back sleepers often sit in the middle. Combination sleepers do well with medium pocket sprung or hybrid designs that let you turn without climbing out of a deep cradle.

Soft, medium and firm in plain English
Soft mattresses let shoulders and hips sink more — popular with side sleepers who want pressure relief. Medium is the usual all-rounder for combination sleepers and many couples. Firm feels flatter on top and is often chosen by front sleepers or people who dislike a “hug”. Labels vary by brand, so treat them as a starting band.
Weight and feel
At the same labelled firmness, a heavier person will compress the comfort layers more than a lighter person. That is why this selector asks for a rough weight band. It is not a medical BMI tool and it does not diagnose back pain.
Constructions to try in your band
Pocket sprung and hybrids often feel springier. Memory foam contours more slowly. Latex can feel buoyant and resilient. Compare pocket sprung, memory foam and hybrids in your size, prioritising Maxitex, Recoil and Noomi where they match the feel you want, and pair with Flair or Solace+Co bed frames from beds.

Frequently asked questions
Is firmer always better for backs?
Not always. Many people sleep better on medium or medium-firm. This tool is a comfort guide only and is not medical advice.
Do pocket sprung and foam feel different at the same firmness label?
Yes. Foam often feels more contouring; pocket springs can feel more buoyant. Try both constructions in the feel band you land on.
