What size is a double bed?

A double bed is 135cm wide by 190cm long, or 4ft 6in by 6ft 3in. It is 15cm wider than a small double and 15cm narrower than a king, with the same 190cm length as both. Double beds comfortably fit two people. Compact enough to fit most bedrooms, a double bed is a popular choice when upgrading from a single, looking for a guest bed, or if you’re just short on space.

Is a double bed and a queen the same?

Not quite. In the UK, a “queen” often refers to a small double bed, which is 120cm wide by 190cm long. It’s narrower than a standard double, making it better for smaller rooms while still offering more space than a single.

Is a double bed big enough for two people?

Yes. A double is the most popular size for couples and gives each person about 67cm of width, a little narrower than a single bed. If you or your partner are tall or move a lot at night, a king size bed adds 15cm of width. For one sleeper, a double bed offers plenty of room to spread out.

Which double bed is best for storage?

For the most storage, a double ottoman bed is the strongest choice, because the whole base lifts to reveal a space the size of the bed. These are great for rooms that have no space for drawers to open or if you have larger items to store. If you prefer drawers, a divan bed or another bed with storage keeps everyday items to hand.

What should I look for when buying a double bed?

Start with the frame size, as a double bed frame is usually a few centimetres larger than its 135 x 190cm mattress. Then decide whether you want ottoman or drawer storage, a wooden, metal or upholstered frame, and the headboard height that suits your room.
