What size is a small double mattress?

A small double mattress is 120cm wide and 190cm long, or 4ft by 6ft 3in. That makes it 30cm wider than a single and 15cm narrower than a standard double, while keeping the same 190cm length as both. The extra width suits one adult who likes room to move. It still fits rooms that cannot take a full double.

These mattresses are meant to fit a small double bed frame. For every UK size in one place, see our UK bed and mattress size guide.

Is a small double the same as a 4ft, three-quarter or queen size mattress?

Yes. A small double, a 4ft mattress, a three-quarter (or 3/4) mattress and a queen-size mattress all describe the same 120cm by 190cm size in the UK. The different names cause most of the confusion when people shop. Queen is an older term and is not an official UK size, so always check the measurements. If it reads 120cm by 190cm, it is a small double, whatever the label says.

What is the difference between a small double and a double mattress?

A small double mattress is 120cm wide. A standard double is 135cm wide. Both are 190cm long, so only the width changes. That 15cm can decide whether a bedside table fits on each side of the bed. If two of you share every night, a double mattress gives more room. For one sleeper, or a couple who do not mind sleeping close, a small double mattress is usually enough.

Can a small double mattress fit two people?

It can, but it is snug. Small double mattresses leave less width for each adult, so they work best for couples who sleep close and do not move much. For a guest room, or a teenager moving up from a single mattress, it is a comfortable upgrade. If either sleeper is restless or tall, it is worth sizing up.

Which type of small double mattress is best?

There is no single best option, only the right one for how you sleep. Each type of small double mattress suits a different sleeper:

• Small double pocket sprung mattresses use individually wrapped springs that move on their own, which limits disturbance when a partner turns over.
• Small double memory foam mattresses mould to your body and ease pressure on the hips and shoulders, so they suit side sleepers.
• Small double latex mattresses offer an eco-friendlier option to memory foam, with a cooling sensation if you’re prone to sleeping hot.
• Small double hybrid mattresses combine springs and foam for support with some cushioning.
• Small double orthopaedic mattresses give firmer, targeted support that back and stomach sleepers often prefer.
• Eco foam mattresses are a lighter, lower-cost option made from natural materials such as bamboo.

What firmness should I choose for a small double mattress?

Firmness is how soft or supportive the surface feels, and the right level depends on your sleeping position and weight. Side sleepers tend to prefer a small double soft mattress that cushions the shoulders and hips. Back and stomach sleepers, and heavier sleepers, are usually better on a firm mattress. If you are unsure, a small double medium firm mattress is the most popular choice and suits most people.

How thick is a small double mattress?

Depth is not fixed by size, but most range from 20cm to 30cm (8 to 12 inches). Small double mattresses in our range vary from slim foam models of 10cm to 18cm, to deeper pocket-sprung from 20 to 25 cm, and thick pillow-top designs from 28cm, so the height varies by product.

You will find the depth of each mattress listed on its own product page. A deeper mattress is not automatically more supportive, so choose based on feel and filling rather than height alone. Just note that a thicker mattress will sit higher on your frame, and thicker small double mattresses require deep-fitted sheets.

How much does a small double mattress weigh?

The weight of a small double mattress varies, but it generally ranges between 15kg to 20kg, depending on the materials and construction.

Do you sell long or continental small double mattresses?

Yes! Standard small double mattresses are 190cm long. If you need extra legroom, our continental sizes are 10cm longer, at 120cm by 200cm. Check your bed frame before ordering a continental size, as it needs a longer base to fit.

Can I add a small double mattress topper or protector?

Yes. A small double mattress topper adds a layer of comfort or a little extra depth to an existing mattress, and a mattress protector guards against spills and everyday wear. Both come in the 120cm by 190cm size to match your mattress.
