What are gaming desks made of?
Published
Short answer: Gaming desks are commonly made from engineered board such as particleboard or MDF, often on a metal or board frame, with some in solid wood. The material line on each product page tells you exactly what that desk uses.
Material affects weight, look and how a desk copes with heavy monitors. It is worth knowing what you are buying.
Wood, metal or board?
Gaming beds and desks come in metal frames, solid wood and engineered board. Metal frames tend to be slim and industrial-looking, solid wood suits a calmer look and some ranges are FSC-certified, and engineered board allows built-in desks, shelves and colour panels. Check the material line on the product page, as it tells you exactly what each piece is made from, and match it to the style of the room and how long you want it to last.
Working out the desk size you need
Desk width is driven by your screens and peripherals. Measure the width of each monitor including its stand, add space for speakers or a microphone arm, and allow room for a mouse to move freely. Depth matters too: a deeper desktop keeps a large monitor at a comfortable distance and leaves space for a keyboard in front of it. Always compare these with the desktop width and depth on the product page rather than the overall footprint, which can include shelves or legs.
Delivery and assembly
Most gaming beds and desks arrive flat-packed for self assembly; the assembly line on each product page tells you what to expect, and some high sleepers list the floor space needed while building them. Build larger pieces in the room where they will stay, as a finished high sleeper is unlikely to fit through a doorway in one piece. Have two adults for raised beds, follow the instructions in order, and retighten fixings after the first few weeks. Delivery details are in our delivery FAQ.
