How do I set up a gaming room in a loft or under a sloping ceiling?
Published
Short answer: Put the tallest pieces where the ceiling is highest, keep the desk where you can sit upright, and consider a lower gaming bed rather than a high sleeper. Loft rooms can get warm, so give consoles and PCs good ventilation.
Sloping ceilings change what fits where.
Check the ceiling height for high sleepers
A high sleeper puts the mattress well above the floor, so the gap between the top of the mattress and the ceiling matters as much as floor space. Measure from floor to ceiling at the point where the bed will go, especially in loft rooms or under a sloping roof, and compare it with the bed height on the product page plus the depth of the mattress you plan to use. The sleeper should be able to sit up without hitting their head, and a light fitting directly above the bed can get in the way.
Measure the room before you choose
Start with a tape measure, not a product page. Note the length and width of the floor space you can actually give up, the ceiling height, and where the door, window, radiator and sockets sit. Then compare those figures with the overall dimensions listed on each product page, which for beds with desks often include a ladder or staircase that sticks out beyond the mattress area. Leave enough clear floor in front of a desk to pull a chair back and stand up comfortably, and remember that doors and wardrobe fronts need room to swing.
Leave space for consoles and PCs to breathe
Consoles and gaming PCs produce heat and need air to circulate. Follow the manufacturer's guidance on clearance around vents, avoid shutting them inside a closed cupboard while they are running, and do not put them on soft surfaces such as a mattress or duvet. On a high sleeper with a desk underneath, keep the console or PC on the desk or a shelf with open sides rather than tucked into a tight corner.

Frequently asked questions
How do I set up a gaming room in a loft or under a sloping ceiling?
Put the tallest pieces where the ceiling is highest, keep the desk where you can sit upright, and consider a lower gaming bed rather than a high sleeper. Loft rooms can get warm, so give consoles and PCs good ventilation.
How do I check a high sleeper will fit under my ceiling?
Measure floor to ceiling where the bed will go and compare it with the bed height on the product page plus the mattress depth, leaving room for the sleeper to sit up.
Should I measure the room before buying gaming furniture?
Yes. Measure floor space, ceiling height and the positions of doors, windows, radiators and sockets, then compare with the overall dimensions on the product page.
Can I put a console in a cupboard?
Not while it is running unless the cupboard is open and well ventilated. Follow the console maker's guidance on clearance around vents.
